Our Mushroom Maven is honored

Vera and her dedicated assistant, Karen Schoen

Vera and her dedicated assistant, Karen Schoen

Passion. Commitment. Dedication. Love. All these words and more describe the relationship Vera Evenson, Curator of Denver Botanic Garden’s fungal herbarium, has with the most elusive of kingdoms. And yet, few know quite how remarkable this woman is. Vera recently received a distinguished award from the North American Mycological Association in honor of her 30+ years of dedication and expertise in the field.

2008 Pumpkin Fest

Last weekend Denver Botanic Gardens hosted the annual Pumpkin Festival. Sure, it was 45 degrees, misting and pretty muddy, but that only added to the autumnal charm of the event. I know, I know….pretty “optimistic” view but a quick look at some of the pictures and you can see that many of the over 16,000 pumpkins in the 7 acre field were selected by ghosts and goblins from all over the Denver area.

A special thank you goes out to the almost 500 volunteers that made this event possible. We appreciate your dedication to making this the best Fall experience in Denver. Thank you to all who attended as well. We look forward to seeing you next year!

The pumpkin patch is still open every day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until the end of October so if you still need to find the perfect pumpkin for your mantel or front porch, c’mon down and see us! Happy Halloween.

All good things must end…

I had such good intentions to blog my way through South Africa, and the five blog entries I managed represented about as many days. The first days. So many places, so little time to type!

A Love Letter to the Montréal Botanical Garden

Only two days left to enjoy my time at the Montréal Botanical Garden. So, I decide to walk in the Courtyard of the Senses where the signs that identify the plants are written in French, English, Latin and Braille. On the MBG website there is a quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the man who wrote the French classic, The Little Prince: “L’essentiel est invisible pour les yeux.” (The essential is invisible to the eye). With this in mind, I marvel at the beauty of the delicate snail flower, and then

Normal Ones

Last night I decided to check out the Digital Nature event here at the Gardens. My understanding from Rachel’s blog was that it was a digital art event with a focus on how technology does not have to be separate from nature. I really did not know what to expect but ended up attending what was probably the coolest event we have ever had here at the gardens.

What was great was how the Gardens were not only the host for this event but were integral to the art presented. One artist recorded the sounds of the wind moving through the golden rain tree, converted it to light and projected it back onto the tree. I enjoyed all the artists but my favorite was Ten and Tracer – he had literally created music from plants.

Wonders of Africa

The symbol of Kirstenbosh, the National Botanical Garden in Capetown, is the Bird of Paradise. An amazing “albino” (which is missing the red pigment and has the still has the yellow pigment) was released a few years ago as Strelitzia reginae ‘Mandela’s Gold.’ We were thrilled to see this in several places around Kirstenbosch and also in private gardens. But South Africa is not just for plant nerds.

This year’s Urban Nature theme has been rich fodder for discussion of the interaction of the urban and natural worlds. This Thursday evening, Oct. 9, the Gardens’ Education Department presents Digital Nature–a program that extends the annual theme to address the intersection of the natural and digital worlds. These worlds needn’t be mutually exclusive, and many digital artists

Finally, out to the veldt!

Although I have been to Capetown on all of my six trips to South Africa, this was the first one where I managed to actually get to the top of Table Mountains.
