It’s time for the second session of Literature of the Land, a book club series organized by the Helen Fowler Library that focuses on topics related to the land and to nature. We’ll delve into literature related to any and all aspects of the natural world, discussing topics that may range from environmental issues to the culture of food and drink, from the American dust bowl to the cinnamon trees of Southeast Asia.

Indigenous Film at the Gardens: August 20 Student Made Short Films (USA and Canada)
In support of our 2011 exhibition, Native Roots | Modern Form: Plants, Peoples & the Art of Allan Houser, we are partnering with the International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management (IIIRM) to present a year-long film series highlighting indigenous voices and issues from around the world.
Youth Program: Student-Made Short Films

This youth program will feature a collection of short films from two film-making programs working with native youth: Native Lens, located in Seattle, Washington and Wapikoni, located in Quebec, Canada. The films include animation and live action, documentaries and narrative pieces.
Gates Hall. Doors at 12:00 p.m.; Films run 12:30 – 2 p.m. Free; Suggested Donation of $5 supports public programming at Denver Botanic Gardens and IIIRM. For details visit Denver Botanic Gardens Events.

Opening Reception and Artist Talk - August 20
In the Auto Immune Response (AIR) series, Wilson (Diné) addresses the relationship between a post-apocalyptic Diné man and the beautiful but toxic environment he inhabits. The series investigates rapid transformation of indigenous lifeways, the disease it has caused and strategies of response that enable cultural survival. A greenhouse hogan is featured in Oak Grove. See the related publication with essay by noted cultural historian Lucy Lippard.
