Part One: A Green Roof in the City

As construction began on the Mordecai Children’s Garden in winter of 2010, it was hard to imagine the future of the space. Few had the opportunity to see the construction and engineering that created the garden that we see today.

The parking structure became a foundation for what would become a one-acre green roof.  Layers were constructed to protect the space from weathering; the concrete paths began to take shape and the garden beds took form.

There are many significant layers to the green roof.

Shhh, A Child is Growing

The following blog post was written by Josh Gold, a Gardens member and proud supporter of Mordecai Children’s Garden.

The first time I entered Mordecai Children’s Garden, I was taken aback by this hidden gem in the Mile High City. A garden on a rooftop? Yeah, maybe in New York but not in Denver.

As I entered the garden on top of the new parking structure at Denver Botanic Gardens, I thought, “Oh, this is going to be a small garden where my son will be able to look and smell some plants.” However, as I walked further in, I saw it was so much more. From bridges, ponds, streams, plants, nature trails and more bridges, this is not your average garden.

This is an adventure in the city. Stroller races on the bridges, digging in the sand, splashing in a stream, playing with the stuffed animals on Marmot Mountain and exploring new plants. Where else can you do this with your kids in one afternoon?

Passing of a gardener

Frank Cabot (Photo by Marina Schinz)

This last weekend we lost the most eminent gardener of our era, and possibly the greatest gardener America has ever produced. Francis Higginson Cabot passed away peacefully at his home in Malbaie, Quebec. Frank possessed the vision and means to practice horticulture on a nearly mythical scale: he created not one but two extraordinary gardens of enormous scope: Stonecrop in Cold Spring, New York, and Les Quatres Vents in Quebec. He pursued other gardens on almost as ambitiously in scale in Wales, New Zealand and New Mexico. He took a leadership role in many organizations, notably chairing the Board of the New York Botanical Garden in the seventies, and serving as Treasurer of the North American Rock Garden society for seven years.

Photographing the Holiday Lights

The holiday season is upon us!! Whew, how did that happen?  Wasn’t it just summer yesterday? Well, it seems like it, anyway.

With holiday lights being installed on homes and businesses all over town and Blossoms of Light (BOL) at Denver Botanic Gardens on York Street and Trail of Lights (TOL) at Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield opening soon, it’s time to get out your camera and tripod and get ready to take some wonderful holiday photographs. If you’re really organized, you can visit BOL or TOL early in the season, make a nice family portrait in front of the beautiful lighting displays and have your cards printed and delivered in plenty of time to beat the holiday rush! Wouldn’t that be awesome?!!

Photographing BOL and TOL presents some unique challenges. The biggest challenge is the low light you’ll be photographing in. By the time these events open to the public each evening, it is fully
