A new decade brings more exciting transformation–to the Gardens, to our Botanic Buzz

We have so many authors from all parts of the Gardens (click on the “More Authors” link in the right column under “authors” to see all of our most recent bloggers) that we wanted to make it even easier for you to learn some of our points of view about Denver Botanic Gardens and Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield by navigating through our new blog layout. I’ll be posting photos of our authors soon so you can see who we are.

We had a busy morning yesterday meeting with David Coleman, Dave French and Tom Whittaker of Bridgeline (our amazing interactive Web agency). Robin Doerr and I talked with them about creating a refresh of our home page and we also saw some inspiring comps for the February redesign of our blog. After that fun and creative session, I was so energized that I stopped by The Shop at the Gardens (located in our Bonfils-Stanton Visitor Center) to check out the huge sale in progress. I was greeted by a display highlighting tons of great deals!

Couldn't resist these bargains (and my 10 percent member discount on non-sale items)!
All of the holiday food items are 75 percent off, so I picked up a few bags of

Be sure to take advantage of great weather this weekend to see the “Jurassic Gardens” Exhibit one last time. The popular exhibition runs through Wednesday, Sept. 30. Kids of all ages love hunting for these prehistoric creatures on the grounds.
You’ll find life-sized, realistic dinosaurs at our York Street location. Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield hosts giant prehistoric bugs. Come see them before the exhibit is extinct!
Concert season is over for the year both at our York Street and Chatfield locations. We had a dazzling array of talented musicians here again this year, and the Gardens have never looked better.

I wasn’t able to make it to all of the concerts, however at every show I was fortunate enough to attend I saw the same couple up and dancing in the area in front of the stage. At the second-to-last concert, I finally had the opportunity to meet these music aficionados. Rick Hum and his wife Karen, longtime members of the Gardens, along with a loyal group of friends, attend most of the concerts together. They do a little research on the various artists that play at the Gardens and talk about the artists’ backgrounds and history while enjoying their picnic dinner on the lawn before the concert.
Here are some 2009 concert reviews from Rick for you to enjoy, along with some helpful tips from him on attending concerts next year that I think you will find useful. Thanks, Rick, for your great insight. I’ll see you front and center at our first concert next year!

Thank you, Online College Blog, for including us in your Top 100 list of botany blogs. We are honored by this acknowledgment. Our blog started in February 2008–we’ve come a long way in such a short time!
Enjoy exploring the list. “Students of botany and amateur plant enthusiasts alike can take advantage of the information offered up by these bloggers.” Look for us under Botanic Gardens, #98.
The Gardens have never looked better. So much is in bloom thanks to all of the recent rain and the expertise of our horticulturists. Although it may look like things are not fully open at the Gardens when you drive by our entrance on York Street! Rest assured we are open with over 100 new parking spaces available on the lower level (enter on York Street) in our new parking garage. No cost for parking. The parking structure will be opened in phases. The second level, with another 100 spaces, is expected to open in the next few days. Gardens’ staff members and landscape contractors are in the process of planting 6,853 plants, including trees, vines and shrubs, on both sides of and throughout the structure.

And the Bonfils-Stanton Visitor Center is absolutely stunning. When you enter, you can purchase your tickets to the Gardens on your right. Very soon you will be able to purchase your Gardens entry tickets using our new ticketing kiosks. The new Shop at the Gardens gift shop is to your left. You’ll find all-natural gifts, plants, gardening supplies, books, and tons more–even dinosaur slippers for the kids.
And one of the traditions that took place at the old Gatehouse is still in place in our new Visitor Center. Many people in the neighborhood dropped by while walking their dogs and their dog got a treat at the old Gatehouse window.

Installation of the life-size dinosaur sculptures started today at York Street. It is amazing to see how realistic they appear. Our talented horticulture and operations staff are doing everything possible to make it seem like our prehistoric guests actually are at home roaming the Gardens. Plant displays will showcase prehistoric plants and their modern relatives. “Jurassic Gardens” opens on April 17.

Iris reticulata by Scott Dressel-Martin
Although it has felt like spring for weeks in Denver and temperatures have been steadily above average, spring has officially arrived at the Gardens. Time for new growth and more change.
The same is happening at this very moment just outside the Gardens’ gates–the old Gatehouse on York Street is almost entirely demolished. These photos, taken yesterday by Scott, show some ceremonial sledgehammer swings at
