Santa's chair in the Grand Court
Time to visit Santa!
Today we are featuring the display that is currently in place at the Cherry Creek Shopping Center (CCSC) in the Grand Court. Denver Botanic Gardens’ horticulturist Blake Burger designs and installs these displays, and provides daily care to all of the beautiful plantings.
This year the CCSC Grand Court has a North Pole theme, complete with Santa and an ice castle. Blake says, “Instead of using red poinsettias, I wanted to change up the color a bit to match the blue and white palate of the holiday display. This display will be set up until the day after Christmas.”

Today is the last day of summer, and that brings fond memories of the amazing 2011 Summer Concert Series at York Street and Chatfield. Did you make it to most of these concerts or just one? Please read these wonderful after-concert reviews from Denver Botanic Gardens member Rick Hum. And enjoy the photos taken by Kate Battan, another member of the Gardens. Thank you, Rick and Kate, for these memories of another great summer of concerts. Rick–we look forward to seeing you and your wife Karen dancing at the concerts next summer!
Summer Concert Series Recap
The music this summer was fantastic. Swallow Hill found a number of great acts who are at important passages in their musical careers. Despite heavy rain early in the summer and challenging situations, such as the storming of the Cheeseman gate, the Gardens staff and the security team did a great job of providing quality experiences all summer.
Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings – The Dap Kings, all in black suits and thin black ties (except the lead guitar player in a gray suit and the back-up singers in black dresses) did a couple of short warm-up numbers. Then Sharon Jones took the stage in an aqua sequined flapper dress. She sang, danced and entertained her heart and soul out. She also invited some members of the audience on stage to be part of the act and all were infected by the spirit. She is a great dancer and powerful, soulful singer.

York Street

Peonies, daffodils and iris in spring; zinnias, delphinium and daylilies in summer; sunflowers, mums and ornamental grasses in the autumn. Whether you have a few flowers tucked in among your vegetables or a full cutting garden, it’s hard not to gather a blossom here and there as you stroll through your garden.
It is in this spirit of enjoying flowers straight from the garden that we are offering Fresh Flower Arranging: From Garden to Vase, a class on creating your own cutting garden and enjoying the flowers and foliage from your garden.
Imagine stepping out your back door to gather a big handful of golden rudbeckia, red globe amaranth and zinnias; then adding in some Mexican sunflowers, goldenrod and greens for an over-the-top arrangement for your table. Or how about combining purple ageratum with tall verbena,

Wonder why B.B. King’s guitar is named Lucille? Wondering how many Grammys he has received? And did you know he did an album with U2? Read this pre-concert review from Rick Hum, one of our Gardens members, and find out the answers to these questions and much more.
The B.B. King concert is the last concert of this concert season. Rick, a special thank you from all of our concert-goers for researching and writing all of these great pre-concert blog posts this year. It has been a fantastic summer for music at the Gardens, and it was a special treat to be able to read these reviews and know about the background of the artists before each show.

B.B. King: Born Riley B. King on September 16, 1925 on a plantation in Itta Bena, Mississippi. His father abandoned the family when he was 4 years old. His mother Nora Ella was too poor to raise her son, so his maternal grandmother, Elnora Farr raised King. He grew up singing in the gospel choir at Elkhorn Baptist Church in Kilmichael. At age 12 he purchased his first guitar for $15. In his youth he played on street corners for dimes and sometimes would play in as many as four towns in a night.
In 1947, he hitchhiked to Memphis, TN, to pursue his music career. Memphis supported a large musical community where every style of African American music could be found.
