Reviewed: “Waterwise Plants for Sustainable Gardens”

The following review comes to us from Maggie Lee, a New Mexico-based garden designer quite familiar with drought-tolerant plants.

In their new book, “Waterwise Plants for Sustainable Gardens,” Lauren Springer Ogden and Scott Ogden offer a unique resource of 200 adaptive plants ranging from trees to cacti. Accompanying the introductory page to each section, the authors’ beautifully-photographed garden vignettes illustrate accomplished examples of textural tapestries and well-proportioned compositions; gardens rich in species and relationships. I find this book both refreshing and useful.

Shhh, A Child is Growing

The following blog post was written by Josh Gold, a Gardens member and proud supporter of Mordecai Children’s Garden.

The first time I entered Mordecai Children’s Garden, I was taken aback by this hidden gem in the Mile High City. A garden on a rooftop? Yeah, maybe in New York but not in Denver.

As I entered the garden on top of the new parking structure at Denver Botanic Gardens, I thought, “Oh, this is going to be a small garden where my son will be able to look and smell some plants.” However, as I walked further in, I saw it was so much more. From bridges, ponds, streams, plants, nature trails and more bridges, this is not your average garden.

This is an adventure in the city. Stroller races on the bridges, digging in the sand, splashing in a stream, playing with the stuffed animals on Marmot Mountain and exploring new plants. Where else can you do this with your kids in one afternoon?

Sustainable Food Film Series

For decades the United States has operated through large industries that provide our nation with almost everything in our lives. Some of the most prominent industries are the grocers that operate supermarkets across the country, which are full of enough food for everyone, in every neighborhood. While we are very fortunate to have access to such high volumes and varieties of food, the convenience of such a massive industry does not exist without consequences.

Rewarding Work at the Gardens

It’s always an honor to be recognized for our work with the Metro Denver community. The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Denver has presented the Gardens with the 2010 President’s Award at the annual awards luncheon this year. The award recognizes our involvement in the Hispanic Chamber and support over the year.

We’re thrilled with the award. At the Gardens we strive to work with a varieties of groups and organizations to enhance the community.

We look forward to continued involvement with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Denver in the coming years.
