Lilac Garden’s Stunning Display of Colorful Irises

Irises in the Lilac garden

Irises in the Lilac garden

Like several other bloggers here, I have really enjoyed the irises in bloom in the Lilac Garden.  They’re stunning!  While we all rhapsodize about how colorful the blooms are, and how marvelous the experience is, I keep going back and finding another gem in the display.  (Of course, that is what we all do: whether it’s Lisa’s post or Joe’s or Ellen’s, you see the gems we’ve just uncovered and can’t wait to share, whether its programs or people or plants.)

For me, its a treat to wander and compare the blooms and colors and impressions they leave on you.  Iris isn’t even my favorite plant (I refuse to choose!) but they were exactly the right display for me when I was out with my camera.  On that day, the lilac were still in bloom, and their sweet scent reached me even before I turned into the garden.  But once inside it was clear that the irises were stepping onto the stage.

Featured Garden of the Week: Lilac Garden

Denver Botanic Gardens is home to over 300 taxa (which includes hybrids and cultivars) of about 69 species of Iris. This diversity is distributed throughout the Gardens, though a majority is displayed in the Lilac Garden. Situated almost in the middle of our grounds, the irises in this garden are currently at their peak flowering stage. A few lilacs that did not get zapped by our late spring frost are also in bloom. Renovated and replanted in 2006, it is amazing to see how this garden has matured in just 3 years. Showcasing our lilac, iris and daylily collections, the Lilac Garden is in color throughout the season, transitioning from one plant type to another.

Do you smell what I smell?

This past couple of weeks while wandering the Gardens and around Denver it seems that there is another fantastic scent greeting my nose around every corner. The cool spring seems to have slowed down the early blooming shrubs and now we have a profusion of flowers that are lasting longer than usual with the cooler temperatures that keep hitting every week (usually with a few snow flakes) helping to keep the flowers lingering.

At the Gardens, lilacs are just starting to bloom, with their sweet scent wafting throughout the Lilac Garden. And while we’re in the Lilac Garden, you cannot forget to kneel down and

It’s a wonderful, bulbous life

bulbous-life-009-small.jpg bulbous-life-005-small.jpg

When I wrote that bulbs have a tough life, I was looking at only one side of the story.  They have a wonderful life!  Just look at the exuberant Iris and Crocus and how they add color and exuberance to the early spring landscape.  They were under the snow earlier this week, but they really shook it off and kept going.
