Ariocarpus fissuratus
The annual Cactus and Succulent Show at Denver Botanic Gardens is this Saturday and Sunday (see details below). Most of us have a cactus or maybe an aloe or two basking on a sunny window. Nowadays, stickery plants like these are more fashionable than ever. I was just in Los Angeles a few months ago and there were succulents EVERYWHERE–in containers, on balconies, along the street parking strips. I took the picture above at a friend’s greenhouse in Pueblo (that’s a spectacular Texas cactus you are not apt to see in supermarkets). It’s very sensitive to overwatering.
There will be experts on hand at this show to tell you about plants like these and advise you on the very best ones to grow in your garden.

Boulder artist Bonny Lhotka combines innovative printing methods with an age-old subject matter in the “Alchemy Garden” exhibit at Denver Botanic Gardens. Her mixed media artworks blend the precise methodology of laser engraving with soft, natural forms such as flowers to achieve an effect that begs investigation. When not referencing the natural world directly, Lhotka’s work addresses the passing of time and the change it brings.
“Alchemy Garden” presents 13 works created specifically for installation in the Gates Garden Court gallery space. On view through September 20; free with Gardens’ admission. Pictured here is Lhotka’s “Lavender,” mixed media engraving on birch boxes.

I visited our Cactus and Succulent collection today and was pleased to see the blooms. Their thickened forms and outlandish shapes hide their underlying solidarity with our more familar landscape plants, at least until they bloom and reveal their true affiliation. The blooms seem all the precious when you contemplate them in contrast to their dry, challenging habitats in the wild.
The Colorado Cactus and Succulent Society is having a show at Denver Botanic Gardens this Saturday, March 29 (9 a.m.-5 p.m.) and Sunday, March 30 (9 a.m.-4 p.m.). The show includes recognized experts available to answer questions, brief yet informative seminars, hourly drawings for free plants, and a variety of plants and supplies for sale. I just hope to see more beautiful plants!
