White tropical waterlily
This week, I got up close and personal with our waterlilies and lotus. Short of donning your own set of hip waders, allow these photos to give you a closer look at the gems in our water gardens.
The Gardens, including the water gardens, are fabulous if not spectacular in September.
Victoria…grandest waterlily of all!
Whereas the hardy waterlilies are slowing down a bit in September (many have been flowering since late May), the tropical waterlilies including the Giant Water Platter are coming into their own. On warm sunny days they will delight all with their handsome leaves and

A cool and rainy summer brings a different, yet inspiring water garden display to Denver Botanic Gardens.
Visitors traversing the Gardens from the southeast corner are again treated to the soothing magical sounds of water, waterlilies galore and dramatic reflections.
Romantic Garden Pool
Photographers marvel at the formal display of Denver Botanic Gardens signature waterlilies, The Rocky Mountain Legacy Collection (RMLC). Featured here this summer are the delightful pink Nymphaea ‘Denver’s Delight’ (Denver Botanic Gardens) and French vanilla N. ‘Denver’ (Strawn). RMLC waterlilies are displayed eloquently throughout the Gardens’ pools.
Fun Time and a Touch of Glamour
Turning heads in the El Pomar Water Garden is a stimulating fountain arrangement consisting of eight adjustable fountain heads, allowing for an assortment of exciting sprays and patterns.

Sporting a lovely blue flower in the research greenhouse last week was the exotic species tropical waterlily, Nymphaea capensis. The plant was grown from seed and presented to the Gardens by Curator of Native Plants, Dan Johnson. Dan and C. McMaster collected the seed in the wild (Feb. 2006) in South Africa, locality of Swellendam, from waterlilies flowering in a large pond at the base of Swartberg Pass. We will be monitoring this special waterlily and anticipate displaying N. capensis in the outside pools in 2009.

Sensory Garden Gem
Created by the 2008 interns and expertly maintained by Horticulturist Angie Andrade-Foster, this delightful water garden features tumbling water and a classical, tiny, red, Marliac waterlily Nymphaea ‘Ellisiana’ (Hybridizer: Latour-Marliac). This darling garden is beckoning to see you.
Romantic Gardens Pool
The featured Rocky Mountain Legacy (RMLC) waterlilies are displayed here and all are unique, beautiful and Gold Medal winners.
The six hardy RMLC waterlilies are: N. ‘Denver’ (hyb.: Strawn), N. ‘Denver’s Delight’ (hyb.: Tomocik), N. ‘Colorado’ (hyb.: Strawn), N. ‘Cynthia Ann’ (hyb.: Strawn), N. ‘Joey Tomocik’ (hyb.: Strawn) and ‘Attorney Elrod’ (hyb.: Tomocik).

In the Monet pond, the leaves of the Gardens’ favorite lotus Nelumbo nucifera ‘Mrs. Perry D. Slocum’ sporting plate-like water resistant leaves. In the background is an exciting graffiti artist’s mural (Lady Pink) and reflection. The colorful murals are part of the Gardens’ popular “Urban Nature” exhibit.
Nelumbo ‘Rosy Clouds’ lotus continues to flower magnificantly in the Victoria (upper) pool. The flowers open in the morning and close in the afternoon, for three consecutive days. They are delightfully fragrant. N. ‘Rosy Clouds’ is an excellent lotus for Colorado Gardens.
Rocky Mountain Legacy Collection (RMLC) tropical waterlily ‘William Mclane’ . . . The purple Nymphaea ‘William McLane’ (hybridizer: Florida Aquatic Nurseries) is one of eight unique outstanding waterlilies flourishing in the Romantic Pool.
